01The standard
Three frameworks govern work-zone traffic control in BC.
They overlap, and contractors routinely satisfy one while failing another. A setup can look reasonable and still be non-compliant, because device spacing and taper length are calculated from posted speed rather than judged by eye.

Certification expires. A contractor who cannot tell you when each crew member’s card lapses cannot tell you whether the person on your site today is currently certified.

Most projects need three or four of these. The crew that staffs your closure is briefed off the plan we drew for it, so there is one company accountable for the sequence rather than two blaming each other.

The plan is what makes the permit possible.
On a municipal arterial or collector, the city wants an accepted traffic management plan before it issues the permit that lets you occupy the road. The instrument differs by municipality; the sequence does not.

Municipal applications are typically processed in three to seven business days from a complete application. An incomplete one is not rejected quickly — it waits. The most common cause of a delayed start is a permit applied for the week the work was due to begin.

Every municipality runs its own permit process over the same provincial design standard. Knowing which department to file with, and what they will send back, is most of the job.
We publish a city page only once that municipality’s permit process is confirmed. Coverage is wider than the pages published — ask about your location.
